Where Do You Go During Severe Weather?

While relatively a new concept in the Hopkinsville and Indiana area, garage style storm shelters have been available to other parts of the USA for a while.  Garage storm shelters became popular in the late 1990s after FEMA released its safe room design standards in 1998. Unlike traditional outdoor storm shelters, these shelters are installed directly into the garage floor, making them easy to access during severe weather without leaving the home.

Over the past 25+ years, garage storm shelters have become one of the most trusted options for families in tornado prone areas, offering quick entry, reliable protection, and compliance with FEMA and ICC-500 safety standards.

How they came about:

Research in the 1970s and 1980s (especially after devastating tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas) pushed FEMA and universities to explore smaller, reinforced indoor safe rooms.

  • In 1998, FEMA released Publication 320: Taking Shelter From the Storm, which gave homeowners official design guidance for in-home safe rooms, including garage installations. This was the turning point for indoor/garage-based shelters.

Garage Storm Shelters Emerge (Late 1990s–2000s).....

  • The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the first garage-installed underground storm shelters.

  • These were designed to be flush with the garage floor, allowing cars to park above them while keeping access quick and close to the home.

  • Oklahoma and northern Texas were among the first regions where these became widely installed, especially after the 1999 F5 Moore, OK tornado increased demand for faster-access shelters.

Since that time, weather professionals have said that Tornado Alley has shifted to the eastern part of the country; particularly over the Kentucky and Indiana areas, where tornadoes are more prevalent at night.  It's hard for experienced storm trackers to report on night time tornadoes making it even more important to have a storm shelter nearby for when seconds matter the most.

When seconds matter the most a storm shelter nearby will keep your family safe!
